Governance Education Network (GEN) is committed to developing a national integrated network for advancing governance knowledge with the objective of creating governance capacity in various spheres of governance covering universities, institutions, practitioners, researchers, NGOs, think tanks and the student body of Pakistan which elects to take up governance courses. We welcome the new members joining the Network which now stands at 23. Despite primary commitments of members, it was highly appreciable that the Program Sub-committees held series of consultative meetings during a short period of mid April to early May, 2009 and developed proposals related to their work plans containing methodology, timeframe and requirements for smooth execution of various program components. The Governance Education Network Activating Workshop held on 11-12 May, 2009 at Islamabad was another important milestone achieved which helped to finalize the sub-committees proposals collectively with input of all members’ organizations. Based on the decisions of the Workshop, GINI Secretariat developed a detailed work plan for 2009 and shared it with the members. It is earnestly hoped that the institutionalized basis now provided for undertaking various activities related to governance curriculum, training needs assessment, executive education, research and annual conference have set the stage for smooth execution of various program components.

Governance Network

In order
to achieve excellence in governance theory and practice, discussions were held with Norwegian partners. It was decided that a network of research, education and training and advocacy institutions in the public, private and non-profit sector could be organized to prepare and disseminate governance knowledge as a response to address such governance inadequacies. Subsequently, Governance Institutes Network International (GINI) was set up as a governance purpose organization registered under section 42 of Companies Ordinance 1984 in 2007 with a mandate to undertake the formation of a voluntary network of institutions working on different aspects of governance that would partner internationally with Norwegian Institutes for Urban and Regional Research (NIBR) and other appropriate institutions as identified from time to time.

During the mobilization phase of the program, administrative and technical capacity of GINI was upgraded and program components, structures and work plans were developed. GINI also started the second round of consultations with the stake holders to formalize membership of the network. The organizations who have formally joined the network  and those who are in the process of joining are as follows:
